QotD: Happy Earth Day

Comments

That's why I get my green on every day of the year. It's like... I love my wife on days other than Valentine's Day, too. Y'know?

But I know what you mean about feeling inconsequential in the big picture.
Aww, you're not kutsinta, crom! You're pinakbet like me. :-)
That would depend on the day, as sometimes I am sticky...
I know what you are saying. I to love my wife on days other than V-Day and I love her more each and every day. Working on credit at home...
I think the problem is that most people think the idea is for them to save the world on their own. That's totally not it at all. No, one person, changing one lightbulb, isn't going to make a difference... but a million people, changing a million lightbulbs? Sure it will. A million people reusing canvas shopping bags instead of taking plastic ones? That makes a difference. A million people driving hybrids (or biking, or using public transportation), instead of gas guzzling trucks and SUVs? etc etc. It adds up. And to be honest, I notice a lot of differences between now and 15-20 years ago.

This 'green' movement of recent times, and Earth Day isn't about individuals changing the world all on their own, it's about changing people's attitudes in general. It's about getting communities to change their way of thinking. If people just keep on thinking 'well fuck it, I can't change the world by myself, so I'm not going to do ANYTHING'... what the fuck good will that do? Nothing! That's why things don't get drastically better, because people are selfish, don't give a crap, and as much as they think they can't change the world for the better, they think that they can't hurt anything either. Also not true. Think about the ONE person who threw away this one bag...

I apologize if I come across as bitchy, but I get so irritated at the attitude of people thinking they can't do anything as just one person, so they won't bother trying. I'm not an environmentalist by any means... I'm not perfect in my 'green'ness, and I don't expect others to be perfect, but I for one am not going to let the rest of humanity dictate how I will treat the environment. Maybe it is egotistical to think I can make any difference, but at least I'll know in my heart that I'm not a significant part of the problem.

As for politicians... they can't and won't do enough for the environment so long as the majority of people don't care. There ARE decent politicians out there.... Canada actually has a Green Party which has gained a lot of momentum the last few years.

And with that I say, I still like you, and I'm sorry I ranted on your comments. lol

And now I will go and update my own blog with my own Earth Dayedness.
Perhaps it's because I was born and raised in the Ozarks, an area most people wouldn't survive if they didn't take care of their own, or perhaps it's because I never had money and still don't but I was raised to be pretty darned responsible for myself.

Earth Day, Schmerth Day. It's everyday.

Lol, no worries. I just don't think humanity will ever change. I am usually optimistic about just about everything, but not this. One million is still just a drop in the bucket. Oh, and I am sorry, I was generalizing USA politicians. As an American, I was forgetting that there is the rest of the world, sorry...

As an American, I was forgetting that there is the rest of the world, sorry... <-- LOL! Well you guys do have that Al Gore guy... lol

anyways... a million was just a number pulled out of my a$$ too.. it's much more than that... but either way, I'm not going to try to convince people. The funny thing is, I'm usually quite the pessimist, but I try at least to help.
Would you be more pissed if you realized that the first Earth Day was 30-something years ago? Yep, Back in 1970 people were a lot more optimistic. We've gotten over that now.
Not more pissed. Unbelievable. I like how US presidents keep pushing back requirements. Say by 2025 we will be 20% more friendlier to the environment. It's all a bunch of horseshite.
